The Yankees have the right bats for the porch

Cody Bellinger was activated by the Yankees, as reported by mlb.com, and recorded a hit Sunday. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton remain unavailable, but Bellinger restores another left-handed threat and improves the depth around Rice, Luis García Jr., Chisholm, Grisham and Austin Wells.
That group can work deep counts, pressure the running game and pull mistakes toward right field. The caution in the notebook is New York’s recent habit of starting slowly; this lineup has often needed a second or third look before finding barrel contact.
Pecko’s assignment could become a bullpen problem
The Astros saw their AL West cushion disappear after consecutive defeats shaped by late pitching failures. Their offense built an early lead Sunday, but the staff could not stop the game once traffic began to collect.
Ethan Pecko is listed for his second Major League start, again on five days’ rest. He did not complete four innings in his debut, issued walks and required substantial bullpen coverage, leaving his usable length as Houston’s central question.
Pecko brings a broad mix of four-seam fastball, cutter, curveball, sweeper and changeup rather than one overpowering pitch. The changeup has been the less dependable answer to left-handed hitters, and missing arm-side against this Yankees order would put the short porch squarely in play.
Houston’s relievers are physically rested after Monday’s day off, but recent execution has been poor. Consecutive games slipped away after manageable situations reached the bullpen, an awkward backdrop for a rookie who may need an early handoff.
Jeremy Peña has returned to game action after a right-hand contusion, while Carlos Correa remains out following ankle surgery. José Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker still give the Astros enough quality to test Warren whenever his fastball command drifts.
A warm night and a welcoming right-field target
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium, with temperatures around 77°F, mostly clear skies and minimal rain risk. A light WSW wind may offer modest help toward center and right-center, but it should not control the game.
The park itself matters more than the breeze. Elevated pull contact from left-handed hitters is rewarded in right field, exactly where Pecko’s fastball, curveball and changeup command will be examined.
Both clubs were off Monday, so neither bullpen carries a broad fatigue concern into the series opener. That removes the cheap mileage angle; the case against Houston’s relief corps is about recent command and damage control, not tired arms.
Patient left-handed pressure points to five Yankees runs
New York can make Pecko prove strike-one command against a lineup built to exploit his most difficult split. If he falls behind, his fastball must enter pull zones where Rice, García, Bellinger, Chisholm and Wells can reach the right-field seats without borrowing a tape measure.
The second route is attrition. Deep counts could force Houston into middle relief before the usual starter-to-leverage handoff, reopening the same part of the pitching staff that failed to stabilize the weekend games.
Pecko’s unfamiliarity may buy him a clean trip through part of the order, and the Astros’ best relievers are available. Still, the combination of uncertain starter length, New York’s left-handed depth and the park’s dimensions supports backing the Yankees to reach five runs.
