Two resilient runs, one uneven recovery
Pigato reached the semifinal by beating world No. 143 Susan Bandecchi 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. It was her second consecutive recovery from a poor middle set, evidence that her match tolerance has improved since the back problem that disrupted her US Open preparation.
Vandromme defeated No. 219 Francisca Jorge 6-3, 6-7(7), 7-5 in three hours and 10 minutes, one day after another three-hour match. Her early ball-striking is well suited to hard courts, but more than six hours across two rounds is an awkward bill to receive before a semifinal.
Four and a half games leave useful room
Pigato's task is not to trade at Vandromme's preferred pace. Changes of height and direction can extend rallies, while an aggressive position against Vandromme's vulnerable second serve should create enough return pressure to keep the score close.
The spread survives any Pigato victory and many competitive defeats. Vandromme has dropped the second set in both serious tests this week, so asking her to produce sustained separation after such a heavy workload looks excessive; +4.5 games provides the sensible margin.
