One steady opener, one narrow escape

Kulambayeva’s task is not to out-hit Yaneva. It is to return deep, vary the rally height and ask the Bulgarian to produce clean aggression repeatedly; on clay, that can turn a ranking mismatch into a sequence of contested service games.
The price expects Yaneva to create clear scoreboard separation, yet her recent wins have often involved lost sets, break exchanges and late repairs. Kulambayeva’s +4.5-game cushion covers a tight straight-set defeat as well as most competitive three-set shapes, making it the sounder way to oppose an emphatic favourite’s win.
