The Milwaukee Brewers keep turning routine innings into fielding drills. The Chicago Cubs have already learned that two outs do not mean the traffic is over.
Brewers keep finding another way onto the bases
Milwaukee’s comeback in the series opener secured the season-series tiebreaker and tightened its control of the division race. Jackson Chourio supplied the go-ahead hit, then helped preserve the lead with the game-ending catch.
Jacob Misiorowski is listed to start after five full days of rest in Milwaukee’s six-man rotation. The Cubs handed him his first genuinely poor start of the season last week by refusing to chase, extending counts and waiting for pitches to leak down.
That recent stumble was about command rather than lost velocity or a reported physical issue. Misiorowski has previously shown he can survive without his top swing-and-miss gear, although another laborious outing could bring an early hook.
The Brewers have the right-handed depth to pressure Peterson through Chourio, William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn and Joey Ortiz. Jake Bauers is day-to-day with shin splints and general wear, while mlb.com reports that Grant Anderson has gone to the injured list with biceps tightness.
Milwaukee’s leverage relievers are not fully rested after Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill worked Monday. Brandon Sproat, recalled to replace Anderson, gives the staff a multi-inning option if Misiorowski cannot restore some length to the rotation.
Cubs have a plan for the starter, less certainty behind him
David Peterson is listed to start on five full days of rest. His lower-half mechanics and results had been improving in a regular rotation routine before the Brewers disrupted him last week.
Peterson struggled to get ahead and could not close innings after recording two outs. Milwaukee mixed walks and hard contact with a bunt and hurried infield plays, forcing him into the stretch before the right-handed bats did the heavier damage.
The Cubs’ middle infield remains unsettled because Dansby Swanson is on the injured list with an oblique strain. mlb.com also lists Ian Happ as day-to-day after left knee discomfort kept him out of Monday’s starting lineup.
Pete Crow-Armstrong gives Chicago disruptive speed and power, while Alex Bregman remains the key technical matchup against Misiorowski. The Cubs know how to create early traffic against the right-hander; protecting a late lead has been the less convincing part.
Chicago’s bullpen is reasonably rested, but the inning assignments remain muddy. Jacob Webb returned from his forearm bruise Monday, yet his bridge usage and recent struggles leave the Cubs without a dependable late-game pecking order.
A stable night for line drives, not a wind-aided derby
First pitch at American Family Field is scheduled for 7:40 PM ET, with temperatures around 74–76°F and little rain risk. The retractable roof also removes any meaningful threat of a weather interruption.
No official roof decision has been announced. If it stays open, a south-southeast breeze around 10–12 mph projects more as an inward or cross-field wind than a boost for fly balls.
American Family Field can still reward pull power when pitchers miss up. The more relevant edge here, though, is Milwaukee’s ability to manufacture traffic without waiting for a ball to reach the seats.
Four Brewers runs do not require a slugfest
Peterson is facing the same lineup that just exposed his command and difficulty finishing innings. Milwaukee can apply pressure with right-handed barrel contact, bunts, speed and aggressive first-to-third running against a defense missing Swanson.
Ground balls only help Peterson when they are hit directly at defenders. Anything requiring range, a quick transfer or a play at the plate gives the Brewers another chance to make an ordinary inning crooked.
An early Peterson exit would bring Chicago’s uncertain bullpen hierarchy into play, even with most of its arms rested. Backing Milwaukee’s team total also avoids relying on the Cubs to repeat their recent success against an adjusting Misiorowski.
Peterson had been trending upward before his last meeting with Milwaukee, and an inward breeze could suppress some carry if the roof is open. The wager leans more on traffic and inning extension than pure home-run power, but improved strike-one command remains the clearest risk.
